FAQ’s

How do consults work?

Consultations are free of charge and usually last no longer than 30 minutes. This is a dedicated space for you and the artist to brainstorm your ideas – so bring along references and inspiration. Here we can also see how long the tattoo will take and give you an estimated costing. Please note that these are an estimate. Factors such as detail, design changes and how you sit for your tattoo on the day WILL affect how long the tattoo takes and this will shorten or lengthen your tattoo time and thus your cost.
All costs are always discussed up front! You will never be stuck with a surprise bill.

How about deposits?

A deposit will be charged to secure your booking spot. This deposit is non-refundable. Deposits are only transferable should the booking be rescheduled at least 48 hours in advance. You will only be allowed to reschedule the appointment once.
Cancellations under 48 hours before the appointment, or no-shows will result in your deposit being forfeited.
Your deposit will be deducted off the total for your tattoo.
Deposits are usually up to 50% of the total amount, with R2000 for full days.

And what about design fees?

Designs are not charged for if they are booked with us. If you would like a design done without a booking in place beforehand, then a modest fee will be charged upfront.
Note that all artists have their own ways of working when it comes to design work, and their methods will be discussed with you during your consult, or in the communications before your appointment. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

How do I purchase a voucher?

Easy peasy. You can either email or whatsapp us and chat to us directly, or you can simply buy one via our online store as a normal product.
The information we will need is: who is it for, who is it from (or what you’d like it to say its from), and the amount!
Vouchers are valid for 6 months from purchase date. Aside from Christmas vouchers, which are valid six months from the 25th of December.

What are your rates?

Our shop minimum is R700.
From there our artists charge between R900 to R1300 per hour.
Full days are charged at set fees, between R5000 and R7000, dependant on which artist you choose.
We have ways and means of working with budgets (yes, Cyril’s economy has taught us a thing or two), so don’t be afraid to tell us what you want. Of course, we don’t go below shop minimum, but for bigger projects we have options available.

How do I look after my new tattoo?

There are two main ways we like to heal a tattoo: second skin and dry healing. We all do prefer to use the dry healing method for bigger pieces. But second skin is available at you or your artist’s discretion.

For dry healing: You should keep the clingfilm barrier on your new tattoo for at least two hours. You can keep it on for longer if necessary, but not for longer than 12 hours. Once you unwrap your tattoo, wash it with your clean hand using warm water and a bar of gentle, antibacterial soap. Let it air-dry for about ten minutes or so, for most pieces. For larger full colour pieces, let it dry out completely for two days before using any kind of cream. Don’t panic, your artist will advise you on the best way to go.

My approved list of aftercare creams: Ingrams original Camphor Cream, Aquafor (plain aqueous cream), E45, Epimax. Please stick to one of these!

Once dry, smooth on a *thin layer* of the recommended aftercare. It is very important that you use a very thin layer, as you do not want to smother the tattoo. You use this aftercare twice a day for two weeks. You can use it for longer if you like, it only makes your skin healthier.

It is important to note you cannot go swimming, or bathing with a new tattoo. You should take quick showers, so that the tattoo stays clean, but does not spend lots of time in water. DO NOT SCRATCH. It will get itchy as the new skin grows in. Do not scratch it, or it will heal badly. Leave it alone.

In the long term, sunscreen is now your best friend. Keep it out of the sun as much as possible, and look after your skin. Remember that a tattoo is part of your skin, and should be looked after as such.

Do you guys have aftercare products there, or do I need to hit a pharmacy?

We do hold aftercare products in studio. We have plain soap bars made for tattoos, by a local soap maker. And we supply plain aqueous cream.
A set costs R100.

Does getting tattooed hurt?

Pain levels vary depending on the person’s pain tolerance and the location of the tattoo. Generally, areas with more nerve endings or thinner skin tend to be more sensitive.
And before you ask, no we do not use numbing cream.
This is because it affects the long term healing process, as well as your ability to sit through the larger piece.

How long does it take to heal?

Your tattoo will generally take about 2 months to heal up completely.
If in this time the colour seems dull – it may just be because a thin layer of skin will form over the tattoo until it is healed – making the colour appear lighter than it should. If after 2 months this is still the case – you may require a touch up.

Infection can be characterized by swelling or redness on or around the tattoo.

If you suspect you have a mild infection (which can be caused by sensitive skin, sweat, irritation, over caring or under caring) come by and let us have a look – something that looks suspect to you may very well be quite normal – like minor scabbing. We can gauge whether you need to seek medical attention or whether you are healing normally. Please do not be afraid to ask and do not leave it too long

If you follow a careful after-care regime you should not scab too much – if you think your scabs are too thick – come by so we can have a look and advise.

Itching is normal, try not to scratch.

What should I do to prepare for my tattoo?

Drink water! Hydrate and keep your skin moisturised, avoid UV exposure and wear sunblock! We could not emphasise this more, hydration is the most important thing you can control going in to your appointment. Don’t drink alcohol for a few days before the session, eat well and get good rest. On the day, come with a full stomach, bring some snacks and drinks. Lastly, if you are going to be here for the whole day, bring some headphones, watch a movie, or bring a book!

Do you pierce kids?

Yes, I do pierce kids. I will pierce kids from the age of 10 and older provided they have parental consent and provide consent themselves for the piercing.
At this young age, we will only pierce lobes initially.

Can you use a ring initially?

Unfortunately we can not start initial piercings with a ring. There are many reasons for this but most importantly, starting with a ring causes too much movement and irritation and can slow down healing.

Do you do snake eyes piercings?

This one is easy to answer without any hesitation.
Absolutely not!
Snake eyes piercings are notorious for being very dangerous and causing significant tooth and gum damage therefore we will not perform these piercings
.

Doesn’t a needle hurt more than a gun?

It does not. The shape and design of the needle makes them incredibly sharp meaning they are able to pierce through the skin with very minimal trauma meaning you have a virtually pain free piercing experience.

From what age can I get pierced?

From the age of 16, with parental consent.

Without, you will have to be 18 years old.
Bring ID if you are lucky enough to look younger than you are.

Which other piercings do you not recommend?

Another popular piercing that we won’t perform, and strongly advise against, is the Smiley piercing. This is due to the damage it causes to the gums and teeth.
Any other horizontal tongue piercings, or other such risky ones that endanger the client. Whether short term or long term.

What sterilising methods do you use on your tools and jewellery?

We use a multi-part steri cycle. Starting with a soak in a chlorhexidine solution. Followed by a good old fashioned scrub. Each tool or piece of jewellery is then individually packaged and sealed. The tools are sent through an autoclave cycle, then join the jewellery in a UV box for storage.

Is any needle re-used at all?

Absolutely not.
We do not even re-use needles on the same client for a second piercing. Not only is it a hygienic nightmare; the first use of the needle bluntens it slightly. This causes only more trauma to the skin, and as we are committed to the cleanest, and smoothest piercings, we’d rather just use a brand new needle.
